Ah, Reading Day. One of my less productive days. Ordered my CRT harness, then spent half the day playing Half-Life. Hoping to beat it before I leave. Mom called a few times. Told me the van rental company screwed up and now I don't have a van to transport stuff. That sucks. She's trying to find a new one as I write. Meanwhile, she asked me if I knew any good storage places in Blacksburg. I didn't.

Went to Kroger for soda, to Student Services for depositing money, then more Half-Life. Then I took a shower, and headed for Bogen's to meet VTSFFC. New waitress there, Sarah. She was...new, if you take my meaning.

And thus, here I am. I have my CS exam tomorrow at 4:25. My only in-person exam, thank the gods. The other one's online, open notes and open book. It should be posted tomorrow. But that's for the weekend, or possibly Monday. Now, I return to Half-Life.

I just got off the phone with my mom. We have a truck for next week. Took a hell of a lot of wrangling, though. She called every rental place in town. Almost all of them wouldn't talk to her without a major credit card (she has a check card -- apparently, that's not good enough). A lot of them treated her like scum because of it. Enterprise said to her that if she was't good enough to have a major credit card, then they didn't want to do business with her. She's now crying because of that statement. Fucking assholes.

Like a credit card is some symbol of status. "Whee! I have a piece of plastic that can put me in more debt than a dot-com!" I mean, if one has a check card, wouldn't that be better than a credit card as they draw on one's bank account rather than on debt that he or she may or may not pay back? And they don't take them. I guess that's because they have to ensure that you're building up debt and helping the economy like any good American consumer. After all, we're not terrorists, are we?

Well, damn it, I'm not standing for it. I'm never getting a credit card. One, I have a check card, and that's good enough for the Internet. Two, it's all a corporate plot (don't snicker, I'm serious) to give us more debt and make us feel worthless if we don't have one. If they don't like it, then they don't have their priorities straight, and they'd rather lose customers. Fine by me.

So, to sum up...1) rental car companies are assholes, 2) Mom's crying right now because these places browbeat her about not having a credit card, 3) credit cards are evil and are worse than check cards, and 4) I'm never getting a credit card. I never really wanted one anyway.

Heh...

Just got back from my CS exam. Dave did the question numbering in Roman numerals! "There are XLV questions on this test." Four of his questions were giveaways, as he admitted to screwing up on one and gave the answer, two had only one answer on them (he does that a bit), and one was a giveaway if you knew anything about Roman numerals ("How many questions did this exam have?").

I would say I aced it, but [livejournal.com profile] robertliguori pointed out the dichotomy between one's personal feelings of success and reality. As in we both felt like we aced the last two tests, but didn't in reality. Well, I felt like I aced it. And it's over, so warm fuzzies all around (or cool splashies, as that's what I really need).

I'll rest a bit, and then go do laundry.
