• Games are something I enjoy playing. Card games, board games, video games, RPGs...it doesn't matter to me, as long as it's fun and interesting. When I was a lad, I played games aplenty; they couldn't tear me away from my Game Boy at summer camp, much to the chagrin of my counselor, who called me antisocial. Alas, I don't play as much as I used to, with Spiel's hours being cut and me being financially unable to go to Origins. Maybe next year will be different.
• Computers have been with me since my childhood years, when I, like many of my age, first sat down in front of an Apple ][e in elementary school. It inspired in me a love of computers -- and, indeed, a love of games. I used to take BASIC programs out of magazines like 3-2-1 Contact and enter them into the computer when I was a kid. Eventually, at the tender age of 11, I made my own clone of Dope Wars (though I didn't really know it at the time; mine was a gold market simulator). I telnetted to BBSes when I was 8. All of this, of course, led to my chosen field.
• Star Trek was perhaps the first bit of sci-fi I was ever exposed to. My mother was a Trekkie; she taped all the episodes that came on the crappy TV we had with the rabbit ears, and I used to watch it with her. I sneaked tapes over to my room and watched them there. It has a special place in my heart; it showed me a world where nobody wants for anything, where people work together for a common good, where people are treasured, and nobody is considered inferior. It's a world I look up to strive to help create. This is also, BTW, why the reboot pisses me off so much; it threw all this away so J. J. Abrams could have his explosions and his attitude. It is an Abomination.
• VTSFFC is an organization I became very attracted to when I was a freshman at Tech. I had never really been popular in grade school; I had very few friends, and some acquaintances. Most people saw me as a curiosity, a freak, or someone to help them do their homework or fix their computers. VTSFFCers, at least at the beginning, were some of the first people that treated me otherwise. These days, I have mixed feelings about it; the iteration of VTSFFC I was involved in had some problems, no mistake. But as an idea, a concept, I think it's a solid one, and I hope to get it going again.
• Blacksburg is a place I've enjoyed, truth be told. It's a beautiful town, it's walkable, it's cheap, and it has a small nucleus of tech jobs and geeks. It's not as appealing as it was when most of my friends lived here, but it still has its positive attributes. Sometime in the future, when I stabilize my financial foothold, I may move away. But that's a ways off.
