If you live on the Tech campus, you've probably seen that wonderful login page by now...and have had your connection drop out at least once. Try this before calling 4Help:

  1. Click on the Start Menu, click "Run".
  2. Type cmd in the box, then click OK.
  3. In the window that appears type ipconfig /release and hit Enter.
  4. When that's done, type ipconfig /renew and hit Enter.
  5. Close that window, and try to open up a website. You should get that login page. Bookmark it, you'll prolly need it later.
  6. Type in your PID and password, click the "Log In" button.
  7. You should be OK now. If a little pop up window appears, don't close it, you'll be looged out if you do. it's OK to close it -- just click "Cancel" if a message box appears asking if you want to log out. (Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] yubbie.)

If this doesn't work, consult 4Help, your RCC, Get Connected staff (if they're around), or your pineal gland.

I still gotta say that is the most fucking retarded system of staying logged in I have ever heard of.

You don't get logged out if you close the pop out. Only if you say "Yes" when you try to close it and it says "You're closing me - do you want to log out now?" Hit cancel and it'll go away. Or turn on pop up blockers, and you'll never see it at all.

I had my pop-up blocker on earlier this week, and it still disconnected me. May have been a coincidence. We'll see.

See my comment in Tiger's journal. The box in the Cassel switchroom, which covers about half the dorms, was having issues; the fixes they're making to it is causing the periodic need to do lease renewals or to reauthenticate. It's not *designed* to make you authenticate again unless your machine is unpingable, and no one will answer an arp for you, for 10 minutes. The logout function is just a "bonus" for someone that wants to be sure not to be blamed for the next machine user.

Okay, that sounds MUCH more reasonable. I would have blown a gasket if I had to have a little window up all the time.

VT isn't NetZero last time I checked =)
