So, my first days of classes went well....sort of. Here's the breakdown:

  • For my Intro to CpE class, I have Jason Thweatt. He's a good guy, and I know him before -- he's been my faculty advisor for ACO (Academic Competition Organization; think Jeopardy but with students and without the TV cameras). He's a bit hyper, but he seems to know his stuff.
  • For Intro to Chemistry Part ][, I have Amateis again. No complaints here.
  • For my Data Structures class, I have a PhD student named Capra. He seems nice enough, but he acts as if we've never passed a CS or math class before. After telling us not to turn in the course policies acceptance form that day (saying we needed time to study it), he spends half the class going over mundane details of the syllabus, like what the Curator is and how to demo with a TA. Then he spends the other half going over simple math stuff, like what an inductive proof was and what the solutions to various finite sums were. For crying out loud, both OOP and Discrete Math were prerequisites for this course! Get with the stuff we haven't seen before.
  • For Intro to DiffEq, I have John Burns. He seems like a nice guy. Down-to-earth. Practical. And the best things are that 1) almost all of the homework is due online and 2) we don't have to take the common time final (we take his instead). I might like this one.

Today I spent the majority of my time coding HTML and CSS. At first, I was working on a website for my server. Then, [livejournal.com profile] jazzfish mentioned that the Spiel website could use an overhaul. So, I stepped in, and, with [livejournal.com profile] nixve's guidance, it's ready for further critique. Here's what I've done so far. The links page isn't there yet, and the officers page isn't finished, but the rest is what I plan to put up if people like it. Let me know.

And with that, I shall sleep. Or do something else.

Yea, Data Structures starts out like that - often, students really don't remember a damn thing from OOP or Discrete (or, they didn't learn any of it, and just barely got a C by guessing). I bet half the students in your class actually needed that refresher, hell, when I got into DS1 I hadn't seen a finite sum in years (I did those in high school, and took Honors stuff at Tech, so I skipped right over them).

Spiel sample site looks nice :-)

Website looks quite good. I have small stylistic complaints (I'm not a fan of the blue-on-blue for the link box, and I worship at the First Church of Underlined Hyperlinks), but other than those I like it.

Ideally I'd like to see:
  • a page of links (e.g. Funagain, boardgamegeek, maybe some of the game publishers)
  • a page describing our wacky hobby (could be the main page)
  • more info on the History section (though that could require some Old Skool spielers for info)
  • a list of Cool Stuff We Do (currently limited to Tcon, Ifest, and game days, I think)

Clearly I am way better at assigning work than at actually doing it. :) You can probably get a good brainstorming session going tonight, though.
