The laptop came today. Actually, it was still at the FedEx center, waiting to be delivered, but I went over there and bugged them until they gave it to me. It's a bit on the heavy side, and, unfortunately, doesn't fit into my laptop backpack, which means I'll need a case. One more thing to get on Friday...

I played a little with it today. It came with XP Home on it. I reformatted and installed 2000, but I then found out that the video card doesn't have drivers for 2000. So I had to reinstall XP. That took a while. Then I had to reinstall all the drivers, add the CD burning software (I don't trust XP's), the DVD viewer, and the copy of Encyclopedia Britannica I got in the bundle. And that's as far as I got. I had a copy of OpenOffice on a CD, but I remembered that I didn't have the JRE installed to run it effectively. Poop.

I'll be playing with it more tomorrow, but tonight...er, this morning, I must get sleep, as I have work to do.

For those of you just joining us, here's the drill:

  1. Leave a comment saying you want to be interviewed.
  2. I'll reply with five questions for you to answer.
  3. Answer them in your journal, and include this notice so that you can interview others.

And now, without further adieu...

What qualities do you prize in a roommate, and which qualities will have you hovering over said roomate's sleeping form with a pillow by week 2?

Well...I like it when my roommate is neat and tidy -- not white-glove tidy, but I really don't want our dorm to be a festering swamp of filth. I like roommates who ask before using stuff of mine. Knowing when to be quiet (like when I'm working on classwork) is also necessary. The negation of any of these drive me up a wall.

How important are thoughts vs feelings in your overall cognitive processes? If you know something intellectually but feel different emotionally, which decision usually ends up winning out?

Three out of four times, my emotions win out. I tend to be passionate about things I care about.

Tell us about your family.

My mom is a 45-year-old lab technician. In her spare time she enjoys genealogy, Celtic/Irish music, and puzzle games (Tetris is one favorite -- there is also Bejewled and Bespelled). She is fairly conservative, authoritarian, and nitpicky. She knows next to nothing about computers, and is constantly asking me for help on hers.

My adopted sister just turned 18. She mostly sleeps and eats most of the day when she's not at school. Oh, and smokes and goes for walks. Her temperament ranges from somewhat peppy to Evil Psycho Bitch From Hell. She knows a little about computers herself (although more than Mom), so she bugs me about that. And how to do her homework. She and Mom get in fights all the time. She takes things of mine and never gives them back. I think she may be a klepto, as well as a pathological liar. Mom considers her more trouble than she's worth. I don't know about that myself sometimes.

If you were quantum-leaped back into your body on the first day of high school to re-do the whole experience, what would you do differently?

First, I would stand up to authority a lot more. There were a number of times that I clashed with the administration or my teachers on one thing or another, and in the end I always buckled. Ask me about my Columbine horror story sometime when I get back. Second, I would probably try to make more friends. I had a number of acquaintances, but very few real friends. That saddens me, particularly now, when most of my friends are so far away.

Since random internet-quiz-esque questions seem to be popular, which twisted, evil serial killer from real life or fantasy do you see yourself as being most like? (No fair saying Bush. You don't have his ears.)

*sigh* OK...Probably Khan from Star Trek. Higly intelligent, passionate, and vengeful. Yes.
