Rejected Again
Jun. 23rd, 2008 02:57 pmI had this job prospect that I thought I was a shoo-in for. It was working a helpdesk -- I did the exact same thing for 4Help for two years. I made myself presentable, pulling my hair back, taking a shower, shaving, etc. I answered their questions with ease. It was the smoothest interview I had in months.
I hadn't received any word from them, so I gave them a call. They said they gave the job to someone else, and that the others (including me) would be getting letters soon.
What the hell does it take to break in to this field? I have two years helpdesk experience. I have a CS degree. I have a good record for excellent customer service. And yet it's still not enough. Hiring reps make Goldilocks look positively indifferent.
This week was a close thing. I almost got my electricity cut off were it not for a good friend that I'm very grateful toward. I had my phone cut off for two days. And when I get it back on, my mom calls, telling me that if I don't get a job in the next 3 months, she was going to have me sublease my apartment and move back in with her, back to C-Ville and my little room, with no friends, no way to get around, and even worse job prospects.
I don't know what to do. Almost every department at Tech seems to have rejected me, and the other firms want people with years of experience in some obscure field or another that I don't have. I can't move out of town, because with no license, I have no means of getting around elsewhere, unless it's someplace where the rent is ridiculously high.
And the bitch of it is...I seem to be the only one with this problem. Almsot every one of my friends seems to have their perfect life, while I'm barely surviving and keeping sane. Perhaps I'm cursed. I don't know.
Note: I realize that all of you don't have perfect lives; I was quite upset when I learned the news, and this entry was more or less me venting. I'm sorry if I hurt anyone.

Date: 2008-06-23 08:37 pm (UTC)Also, the only reason I got the job was because I had friends on the inside who told the managers to interview me. The safest hire is one that someone who the manager already trusts will vouch for moreso than the one with experience and a good resume. Reliability, trustworthiness and such cannot be ascertained in an interview or by resume/transcripts.

Do you remember Matt Baber from high school? He's one of their crowd (but I don't think he lives there). They're all the Magfest people, in a nutshell.
Good luck with stuff, man.
