It's been one of those weeks...bomb threats, big box stores coming to Blacksburg, Girls Gone Wild at Oge-Chi's...did the crazy factory start back up again?

In any case, the events of the past week seem to be the perfect time for me to turn 23. After all, I share a day with Lincoln getting shot, the Titanic sinking, Apollo 13...and now, all of this.

Here's to a great Year 23.

Like George Lucas, I'm telling the most recent bits first.

Another bomb threat at work today -- this time, on Torg, Whittemore, and Durham. I got evacced from work and sent to Burruss Auditorium along with the other poor bastards forced out of their respective buildings. There, Provost McNamee, a VTPD captain, 2 FBI agents, and some other Important People showed us the bomb threat letter and asked us if we knew anything about who wrote it. They also asked us if we knew anybody with a beef against the university or anyone who's been having personal problems -- relationship issues, etc. *rolls eyes* Methinks the FBI needs to learn that disgruntled people are not necessarily suspects. I voiced my concerns to one of the Agents about not letting this investigation turn into a witch hunt, who seemed somewhat less than open-minded. Guess I can't be too surprised...this is the group who did COINTELPRO and abused National Security Letters, after all.

Text of the threat as I saw it @ Burruss )

The FBI guy said this note was very similar to the last one. To be honest, I'm not sure what to think about this. It doesn't sound like a prank, but bombing those buildings don't make sense. There's nothing valuable in terms of infrastructure in them. Those buildings aren't occupied much during the weekend. Why do it? Furthermore, why tell people you're gonna do it? It doesn't add up.

I hope this gets resolved, one way or another. Even so, I'm still going to Spiel tomorrow. Nobody's crapping on my birthday if I can help it. Plus, the Cardinal Room is half-underground anyway...

And now for the sucky one...

Girls Gone Wild is coming to Blacksburg next week, to a restaurant called Oge-Chi's. It's a new place, with supposedly tasty food. But now this happens.

And everyone's up in arms about it. There's an online petition with about 2000-odd sigs on it, Tech's threatening to sue Oge-Chi's for using their trademarks in connection with the event, and Womenspace is going to stage a protest.

While I'm all for porn, Girls Gone Wild is sleazy and tasteless. Their founder's been indicted for tax evasion, and has done other bad things. When girls sued him, and they both settle, he cusses them out. So yeah, a real class act.

Honestly, Oge-Chi's should cancel the event before the rest of the town buries them under a sea of bad publicity and boycotts. I don't plan to eat there any time soon, and I would suggest Technicon (who had their supporting members luncheon there this year) to find a different restaurant.
