Its Hour Come 'Round At Last
May. 6th, 2005 10:23 amA couple of guys from Sperry Marine (where I worked last summer) called me about a possible job working to fix (or redo) some of their webpages. Apparently, I am on a shortlist over there for the position.
Coincidentally, yesterday one of my prospective employers in Blacksburg told me that their position has been filled. On a side note, why is it that they ask you if you've gotten that email they've obviously never sent you? It would have come from a vt.edu address, so it's unlikely the spam filter would have kicked it out. But two prospective employers have done that now, and it's getting annoying.
Anyway, in all likelihood, this means that barring a miracle, I'm stuck in C-Ville for my last summer of freedom. No cable, no broadband, and no friends to do anything with -- when I'm over there, it feels like I'm in a prison. Mom never wants to do anything, she's too tired. And her idea of a vacation is going over to my grandmother's house where all they do is gab all day long, and never go anywhere they say they'll take me here or there, but whenever I press the issue it becomes a bitchfest about how they're tired and how they don't want to handle the traffic and they don't want to be on their feet all day long, etc.If I'm lucky, they take me out to dinner once in a while.
So yeah, being stuck in C-Ville really sucks. It wouldn't be so bad if their mass transit system wasn't something pulled from the Byzantine Manual of Bureaucracy, then I could go somewhere to express my geek genes. But I guess I'll have to settle for Origins for that.
Thankfully, Sperry's a decent place to work, and they'll give me the time off. But even though Sperry's a decent place to work, I don't want to end up there when I graduate because 1) C-Ville sucks, 2) they're a military contractor and 3) it's dull. I want to be able to do something interesting with my life, not spend all of it in some cubicle somewhere making Windows programs, totally isolated from people like my friends. Frankly, I want something better than that.
Anyway, I have an exam in 2.5 hours, so I'd better get studying for that.
