Strange Happenings in the Night
Jul. 12th, 2003 11:36 pmA very odd thing has happened this evening. At 21:43, I received a phone call on my Internet caller ID. The caller hung up in short order, but the number seemed oddly familiar, so I looked it up. It was my old middle school. I call back -- no answer. My mind started thinking of other possibilities, and so I IMed yubbie and discussed with him the possibility of the Caller ID being spoofed (summary: possible, but very improbable). I also bounced ideas around about who was calling my house from this school in the middle of the night. None seemed probable.
So I try again. It's about 22:00 now. I receive a response from a Sister Sherwood, who seems like she was calling many numbers from that phone (she stumbled a bit when I mentioned the fact that she called my house) asking to speak to my adopted sister. I give the phone to Mom, and she talks to Sister Sherwood, then hangs up. Mom then clarifies the meaning of the call. Sister Sherwood was from the local Mormon church, asking if my sister would like to come to church with her, and it was solicited -- my sister, apparently, wants to be a Mormon.
While my sister's religious choice is her business, I found the call made me uneasy in the fact that Sister Sherwood of the Mormon church has access to a public school phone on a Saturday night. I don't think she should, especially if she's calling to get people to come to church with her, which is what this seems like to me (unless I'm mistaken). It smacks of the public school system aiding a religion's proselytization. Separation of church and state is important to me, and I think there might be something illegal -- or, at least, immoral -- going on here.
In any case, an investigation is in order. I want to get to the bottom of what is going on.
