We didn't take the Beltway. Instead, from Gaithersburg we used some backroads, got on White's Ferry (http://www.mcmullans.org/canal/whites_ferry.htm), and then took more not-quite-backroads to get me to Ashburn and from there to home.
Our biggest problem lay in the naming of the roads, which appparently happened whilst the city planners were in the midst of a bad acid trip. Well, that and vt_komainu screwed up the directions slightly. Long story short, it took a good 90 minutes to puzzle our way through this...x_X
