May. 13th, 2003 12:37 amUVA called me today. My interview with them is tomorrow. Told Mom, she got fussy. Had to immediately go get my hair cut. As in, as soon as she got home from work. She fussed over my nails, despite the fact that I had just cut and cleaned them yesterday. She fussed over my clothes -- "What are you going to wear? That? Oh, for God's sake, let me iron it!"*sigh* Parents. Don't think ill of me because Mom's obsessing over my appearance at an interview. It's just that she's fussy with regards to everything. It's been less than a week before I got home and she's already thinking about repacking my boxes for next year! Of course, she's like that; she starts Christmas shopping on December 26th. She always likes to rush everything.
Meanwhile, I took a walt today. In my brand-new sandals, which I regret. ended up giving myself blisters on my feet. Ugh. I've started watching my anime collection -- stating with Ebichu, The Housekeeping Hamster. It's an anime about a cute hamster and her 25-year-old female master who is tied to this jerk of a man who she keeps going back to for the sex. It's an adult comedy -- not hentai, though; they don't show that much. It's more sexual language and situations than anything else. Cute, yet perverse.
Speaking of sexual things -- Got a newsletter from GameWyrd tonight -- the ones who set up the Battle Imps. They're talking about the Book of Erotic Fantasy, an upcoming d20 supplement that deals with the mechanics of sex in DND. So, someone's finally done it. I don't really find it all that appealing. It's not the sex that turns me off. No, I find it unappealing the same way I find porno mags unappealing. I mean, why sacrifice a lot of money -- and, in some cases, respect -- for something you can get anonymously off the Internet for next to nothing? I am referring, of course, to The Complete Guide to Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Sure, it's for ADND, but a knowledgable and intelligent DM can make the changes to suit the d20 system. Some have even started this process. My point is that the material's already out there.
Nevertheless, that hasn't stopped WoTC from burning the book in effigy. Quoth their PR monkey: "We find the subject matter distasteful and inappropriate and do not endorse, condone, or approve of its use with the Dungeons & Dragons game. While the OGL license allows anyone, even our employees, to produce products that are compatible with Dungeons & Dragons, Wizards does not approve or control the theme of any third-party D20 product." Translation: If it wasn't for the OGL, this would be dead by now. They even went so far as to fire one of the people working on it (he did things for WoTC, including managing the OGL). This is surprising to me. I mean, they know who their main demographic is. It's not like this should come as any surprise. Besides, role-playing is about fantasy, and that means allowing any fantasy the players choose, including sex. Personally, I think WoTC is suffering from Nintendo syndrome; they're trying to clean everything up to appeal to younger gamers when their true target audience is someone who is young enough to enjoy fantasy but has enough money (from a paying job) to afford the materials. This may hurt them, but, fortunately, they have no way (without pulling the OGL, and that would piss many people off) to prevent others from writing add-ons.
Whew, I've written a lot. Time to get back to anime.
