Jul. 6th, 2003 01:00 amOK, so my 4th was pretty much as what I expected. Some things changed:
- We went to the big park from where they launch the fireworks instead of the high school field adjacent to the park. Principal difference: the park had preshow entertainment, including skydivers and bands (including the jazz band from my HS, who has members I count as friends). Not to mention some good funnel cake. Mmm.
- Saw some friends from hgih school. A Good Thing, though they seemed only half-interested in me. The ones that were some of my closer friends at high school were not present. Unexpectedly, the Johnsons were there -- with the exception of my friend Jeremy, who had to work. Hmm.
- The city didn't pay for the fireworks this year, due to (you guessed it) budget cuts. Thus, a campaign by many of the community's big players was launched to "Save the Fireworks." They made enough to fund this year and next, and are trying for more.
- The fireworks were the best I'd seen in a few years, although they were a bit heavy on the big bangs. Almost deafening. But it was still a good show.
- This year the city "strongly encouraged" everyone to park somewhere other than the park and use the shuttle buses to get to the park. Result: While getting in and out on the road was OK, there was a huge line to the outbound buses and we didn't get to go home until 23:00. File this under "poor organization", maybe?
- Overall, I liked it.
I slept till about 11 or so today, and then decided to learn wxWindows. A fairly easy GUI wrapper, from what I've seen. A lot easier than trying to decipher the Win32 API, anyway. I may make a notepad to try it out. If that happens, I'll post it here. Hopefully it won't suck too badly.
