Classes in Full Bloom
Sep. 2nd, 2002 09:28 amI've just started my second week of classes. My CS teachers are nice to us. One of them, in particular, is a hoot, and really makes things interesting. And his class is the only one I have on Tuesdays! At 2 PM at that! My other CS class, however, meets at 8 AM twice a week(the earliest a class can meet) and I've already missed one because I overslept. My professor was nice about it, though, which was a good thing.
My math classes are a pain in the arse. The profs are tolerable, but they give a bit too much work on occasion. To boot, they have these labs that you must work in groups in and use their software not available to all students, but they can use the computers at their special computer lab off-campus, which is too far to walk, but a short bus ride away. They made all the first-years take orientation this week, so the buses were packed. All this to learn what I already knew, and could use my calculator for...what a waste.
My English class promises to be interesting. It's the smallest class I have, with a really nice professor. We'll be talking about controversial social issues in that class -- the death penalty, human cloning, etc. It should be good.
Of course, classes aren't all I've been doing here. I went to the movies on Friday (there's an 11-plex at the mall) and saw Signs. Not nearly as frightening as it made itself out to be, and the plot's a bit simplistic, but it's still a good movie. Eventually I want to go see Goldmember. Maybe next week...
I also went to this club fair at the student center. Buncha clubs there. Among those that caught my eye was the local scifi club. They seemed very well organized, and they run a scifi convention every March. Sounds like something I want to be a part of (or at least participate in).
There were other clubs too. There's an Academic Team there; one of the leaders was on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire. There's also Amnesty International (which I was involved with in high school), and the ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), which may help later in my CS career (if I still want to be a CS major). There are a lot more. I'm going to have difficulty choosing, methinks.
Especially if my work study thing goes through. Had my interview on Thursday, and the guy seems to like me. He's interviewing four people (including me), and he's hiring at least two, prolly three. So there's a good chance I'm hired. I hope so.
There was a riot downtown early Saturday morning because of the Tech-LSU football game. I wasn't there, so I don't know all the details, but I do know that around 2:30 AM on Saturday, the police declared the downtown area an "unlawful assembly area". Apparently, when all the bars emptied out, the crowd still wanted to party outside. Combine this with all of the out-of-towners that flocked in yesterday, and you have a recipe for chaos that brought in police from everywhere in full riot gear. Not a happy thought. Especially when I saw someone being carted out in an ambulance (alcohol poisoning, I've been told).
Anyway, the only thing I lack at the moment is someone to talk to. Most of the people from my high school here won't talk to me. Some of my friends at other colleges talk to me, but sparsely. On top of that, Em's been so piled on with work she's barely had a chance to talk or update. So I've been feeling pretty isolated. Hopefully this will get better when I go to the club meetings I signed up for.
Anyway, that's how my life's been going. But now I must fly, for calculus waits for no one...
