First day went smoothly. My general impression of the classes so far is that I may be OK. That is, if the personalities of the teachers don't kill me. My Unix class is being taught by a PhD candidate who obviously doesn't want to be there, and apparently doesn't understand why us CS majors got in our major in the first place (A hint for you, Gifford -- it isn't for the pretty pictures). I suspect that he's going to be a PITA for the next few weeks until we start covering stuff in Unix that I don't know about.

Chemistry is looking to be a decent class. Amateis is very nice, and I think we're going to get along fine. Her demos are going to be fun -- she blew up a hydrogen balloon today. Aside from that, the help that is available is fairly extensive. This is one professor who cares, thank the gods. Thanks, tigerofthewind, for pointing me to her.

OOP is managed by Professor McQuain. I've had him before, and he was a riot. I anticipate no problems from him this year.

I wish I could be as confident for Discrete Math, however. Prof. Brown is condescending and paternalistic. Not a good mix. Add a dash of arrogance. Stir well with 80 students. It adds up to a recipe for fear and loathing. The material itself, however, seems doable -- we're working on basic logic theory and such, and by the end he'll be having us do proofs. But he will be annoying.

In other news, I gave up on Debian, blew it away and reinstalled Slackware. It's a shame, too. I really liked Debian's packaging system. But it has proven impossible to work with my Audigy. *sigh* Ah well.

And now, it's to the grindstone I go.
