Got grade for Project 3. I got a 98 -- the TA took off points because my code lacked function headers (which isn't true). Did normal stuff yesterday -- went to class, played games, etc. Some of my friends took me out to dinner at River Mill. And I watched CSI with nius, rainbowsaber, yubbie, and nviibrown. vt_komainu came in just in time to find out that he forgot to buy cat litter, so he ran me home while he was out.

We watched CNN before CSI. You hear stuff about the looting of Baghdad. They think Saddam's buried in a pile of rubble. And meanwhile, the people are going nuts, looting museums with priceless Sumerian artifacts. That's what really angers me. This war has resulted in utter chaos, and the Marines aren't doing a damn thing about it -- except, of course, to protect the Oil Ministry, the only government building to have a 24-hour guard placed on it. While they're fiddling, the city burns around them. And they don't give a damn.

[sarcasm]But at least we rid the world of an evil dictator.[/sarcasm] And to them, I guess that's all that matters. That and going after the next guy. They're starting to warn Syria to "stop supporting terrorism". Does anyone else notice a pattern here? Say, I've got a funny thought -- Before the US decides to go bomb Syria, how about they the clean up the damn mess they made in Iraq first?

And you would be happier if the Marines had opened fire on looters, would you?

Actually, I would. But considering the efforts taken to avoid civilian casualties, I think that the army is limited to shooting back. OOC, why so upset at the army's lack of action, rather than the looters' actions?

Our military != Police. Our police are police. These troops have absolutely no training in dealing with police work.

They are trained how to kill people and break things, nothing else.

Securing the oil ministry was likely done because it was a government building that hadn't been looted by the time they got there. There are only so many troops that can be used for guarding things, because they are still getting shot at and people are still dying. Guarding something is entirely different than police work and crowd control. We could shoot the looters and that's about it, but they are civilians taking back what their dictatorship likely stole from them in the first place

What right do we have to make decisions on what belongs to who when they were oppressed for decades?

We are not talking about invading Syria, that hasn't even been whispered. They are talking about invoking sanctions and embargo's. Stuff they did for twelve years to Saddam in hopes of him changing his ways. There's a long while to go before bombs are dropped.
